FAQ

  • In order to book your preferred day and departure time we recommend booking your sail with us as soon as you confirm your flight to Maui. With that said, because we do offer customizable options we can often squeeze in a last-minute booking.

  • As per coast guard regulations, S/V Artemis and S/V Nova can each accommodate 6 guests maximum. This includes infants and children. Our buddy boat option allows you to charter both sailboats for parties larger than 6 guests. F/V Marjorie Ann can accommodate up to 13 guests for afternoon charters, at the moment we do not offer in-water activities such as snorkeling on Marjorie Ann.

  • Give us a call to chat about chartering our fleet! We can set sail side-by-side with both of our boats to accommodate parties of up to 12 guests. We can sail, watch whales, snorkel, and blue water swim on our sailboats. For afternoon whale watches and sunset charters (NO SNORKELING) for up to 13 guests, book our powerboat F/V Marjorie Ann.

  • Leave when you want! With our custom charter option we can depart whenever you want, although the phrase “the early bird gets the worm” certainly holds true for finding the calmest snorkeling conditions in the mornings. Give us a call to talk to one of our experienced captains and they will help you choose a departure time that works best for you and for the sailing and snorkeling conditions.

  • You are more than welcome to bring your own snorkel gear, especially if you are already comfortable using it. If you have little ones coming along and they are used to a particular set of gear, certainly bring that. We have top of the line SeaSport silicone-based gear which is provided to all of our guests. We do not provide wetsuits, if you’d like a recommendation on where to rent one please give us a call.

  • This is your charter! If you prefer not to snorkel that is totally up to you! We strive to cater to your preference.

  • We find that pool noodles and yellow float belts are the most comfortable combination of floatation for snorkeling activities and we do provide these for all of our guests.

  • S/V Artemis is a 47’ sailing catamaran complete with 2 trampolines on the bow, perfect for lounging and looking down at the water while we sail or while we are anchored up at a snorkel spot.

S/V Nova is a 42’ sailing monohull. Much sought after by traditional sailors looking to feel the heel, aka the lean of the boat while the sails are up.

F/V Marjorie Ann is a 36’ power boat primarily used for fishing charters and afternoon whale watches and sunset charters. She is perfect for larger groups looking to spend a few hours on the water.

  • Yes. We have exterior shade from both our hard-top and our bimini. For those sensitive to the sun, we suggest you bring hats, UV clothing, sunglasses, and reef safe sunscreen.

  • We are able to customize your charter to your comfort level, we have sailed with guests ranging from 12 weeks old to 90 years old. We do recommend that if you have pre-existing medical conditions that you speak with your doctor before in-water activities or activities that may keep you from medical attention for hours at a time.

  • Pricing is for the entire vessel and includes a captain and crew.

S/V Artemis: $1000 per hour, with a 2 hour minimum.
S/V Nova: $1200 for the first 2 hours, $500 per each additional hour.

F/V Marjorie Ann: $500 per hour, with a 2 hour minimum.

These prices do not include gratuity, which is very much appreciated as your captain and crew are part of the service industry.

  • Several of the snorkel spots we visit are known for turtle sightings, but do keep in mind that they are wild animals.

  • Swimming is a very important skill to have before snorkeling so we recommend practicing in the hotel pool ahead of time. We do carry flotation belts and pool noodles and are happy to give some guidance on best practices for snorkeling. Swimming is not a required skill for any of the non-snorkeling portions of your charter.

  • Yes! We pride ourselves on getting as much sailing in as possible. Ma’alaea is one of the windiest harbors in the world, so there is plenty of opportunity to feel the wind push our boat. We do have motors onboard to help us get back to the harbor as the wind often comes directly on our bow after returning from our charters. We do have occasional days were the weather is absolutely calm and we are not able to sail as much, but are able to use our motors to have a wonderful experience.

  • Absolutely! We love to run hands-on sailing charters. Your captain and crew can safely guide you through handling lines and the helm in the dynamic conditions of Ma’alaea bay.

  • Depending upon your charter we have a few options available to us. We will usually sail until we run out of favorable wind directions or until we run out of water and have to tack or jib. There are several different snorkeling spots for us to choose from that are protected from the wind: some of our most visited spots are along the Pali, Coral Gardens, Olowalu, and North Kihei. We are also known to do drift dives, where you jump in the water with our crew (also a certified lifeguard and reef tour guide) and the boat follows along as you drift over satellite reefs or do a blue water swim.

  • While Molokini is a unique snorkel spot, it sees dozens of boats and thousands of snorkelers every single day. We prefer to take you away from the crowds and visit less-frequented reefs. If your heart is set on Molokini give us a call and we can recommend excellent operations for you to choose from.

  • We offer a 48 hour cancellation policy. Any cancellations outside of 48 hours from your departure are 100% refunded. Refunds are not given inside of 48 hours unless we are able to rebook your charter, then we will refund you minus a service fee.

  • Hawaii is known to have many “micro-climates.” In addition, most forecasts come from Honolulu and are fairly inaccurate for our harbor. While it may be raining hard at your resort, it could be bright and sunny at Ma’alaea harbor. We have decades of experience operating out of our harbor and will not take our guests out in weather that is unsafe. We can experience overcast days, light rain days, and most days of full-on sunshine.

  • Rain doesn’t necessarily mean we will not be going out. However, in the vent the conditions are unsafe we will cancel and provide you with the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. All tours are weather permitting and it is up to the captain’s discretion to take you where conditions are the best overall and safe and enjoyable.

  • S/V Nova is a monohull sailing vessel, which means we have a keel with over 8,000 pounds of lead holding our vessel stable. While we are sailing we are known to push through all sorts of water conditions and have a very smooth ride. S/V Artemis is a 47’ sailing catamaran with a 24’ beam, which means she is the perfect stable platform for all sea goers. We may experience some salt spray, but that’s all part of the sailing experience. If you are concerned or have experienced seasickness in the past we do recommend taking a half of a seasickness pill approximately 12 hours before your charter and the other half within hours of departure. You may also speak with your doctor for other recommendations.

  • Yes. All of our sailboat charters include soft drinks and a selection of fare. This all depends on which charter you choose. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions with advance notice. Don’t hesitate to give us a call to discuss your options.

BYO food and drink for charters on Marjorie Ann.

  • You are more than welcome to bring alcoholic beverages onboard. We have all the ice and glassware for serving. Call us up to arrange for mixers beyond our normally provided soft drinks.

  • There is the possibility of seeing dolphins on our charters, but they are wild animals, so sightings are not guaranteed.

  • Humpback whale season in Hawaii is during the months of December-May. We run official whale watches from January-March, with several sightings weeks before and after.
